A small miracle announcing the arrival of Corpus Christi
Barcelona is a city full of traditions capable of surprising even those who already know it well. Some are large popular celebrations, while others, like “l’ou com balla” — “the dancing egg” in Catalan — hide their magic in the smallest details.
Coinciding with the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi — the solemnity celebrating the Eucharist — several cloisters, courtyards and historic buildings across the city are filled with flowers, fountains and colours to bring to life a truly unique tradition: an empty egg that “dances” suspended above the jet of a fountain.
In 2026, this tradition can be enjoyed from June 4th to 7th in several emblematic locations across Barcelona, which we introduce below.

The art of making an egg dance
“L’ou com balla” has been documented in Barcelona since the 17th century and continues to fascinate generation after generation.
The tradition consists of placing an empty eggshell on top of a fountain jet decorated with flowers and fruits, especially cherries. Thanks to the force of the water, the egg spins and appears to dance without falling.
Although there are different interpretations of its meaning, many people associate it with fertility, abundance, rebirth and the celebration of life linked to Corpus Christi and the Eucharist.
Secret courtyards and historic corners filled with flowers
One of the great attractions of “l’ou com balla” is that it invites visitors to discover some of the most beautiful historic corners of Barcelona.

Many courtyards and cloisters are specially decorated for the occasion, creating spaces full of flowers, water and calm right in the heart of the city.
Among the places where it can traditionally be seen are:
• Barcelona Cathedral
• Museu Frederic Marès
• Casa de l’Ardiaca
• Ateneu Barcelonès
• Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes
• Museu Marítim de Barcelona
Each location has its own character and decoration, making it especially enjoyable to visit several of them during these days.
Many local groups and cultural associations follow routes connecting all these spaces, which often offer free admission during the festivities.
A different way to discover the Gothic Quarter
“L’ou com balla” is also a wonderful opportunity to stroll peacefully through Barcelona’s historic centre and discover a more intimate and authentic side of the city.

Very close to our Hotel Continental Barcelona and also to Hotel Continental Palacete, visitors can wander through the streets of the Gothic Quarter, enter courtyards that are normally inaccessible and enjoy corners filled with history.
One particularly unique place is the Ateneu Barcelonès on Canuda Street, located just 300 metres from Hotel Continental Barcelona and usually closed to the general public except on special occasions such as this one.
During these days, the area around the cathedral and Plaça Sant Jaume becomes especially beautiful, with floral decorations and cultural activities linked to Corpus Christi.
