70 documentaries, from Bowie to flamenco, in the Eixample

There are songs that stay with us all our lives, and yet we know very little about their story. Who wrote them, in which room, after what loss or what night of euphoria. In-Edit Barcelona exists precisely for this: to sit in the darkness of a cinema and discover what lies behind the music that has shaped who we are. This autumn the festival celebrates its 24th edition, and for eleven days Barcelona once again becomes a meeting point for music lovers and film enthusiasts.

An edition of big names and premieres

The programme brings together 70 titles across 8 sections, with figures that speak for themselves: 22 world premieres, 4 European, 25 Spanish and 13 Catalan premieres. The screen will trace the careers of David Bowie, Pulp, NOFX, Sun Ra, Amadou & Mariam, Jack Johnson, Cerrone and Earth, Wind & Fire, in a journey spanning rock, punk, hip-hop, disco-funk, electronic and classical music.

Bowie: The Final Act – 30 Oct and 8 Nov

Flamenco holds a prominent place, with tributes to Enrique Morente, Triana, La Niña de la Puebla and Niño Josele. Latin America is also present through films about Pablo Milanés, Rubén Rada and Dominican bachata.

An opening and a closing to remember

The festival opens with a tribute to Marianne Faithfull, who passed away last year. Broken English, by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, captures the artist’s final performance and interview with a unique approach: Tilda Swinton and George MacKay play officials of an imaginary “Ministry of Not Forgetting”, tasked with doing justice to her legacy. The portrait is completed by conversations with Nick Cave and covers by Courtney Love, Suki Waterhouse and Beth Orton.

Broken English – 29 Oct and 5 Nov

The closing film tells a story worthy of the movies. In January 2025, while forced to leave her home due to the Los Angeles wildfires, director Tamra Davis found a box of tapes she herself had recorded in 1995 during an alternative rock tour of Australia. From that discovery comes The Best Summer, with unseen footage of Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters, Pavement, Beck and Bikini Kill. Thirty years later, a time capsule about youth, friendship and music.

Catalan talent in the spotlight

This year In-Edit reaffirms its commitment to local filmmaking. Carla Simón makes her music film debut with Flamenco, a short film starring dancer Rocío Molina that moves between tradition, archive and contemporary performance. Albert Serra presents the Catalan premiere of Seize moments de ma vie, dedicated to actress and singer Ingrid Caven, accompanied by the experimental group Molforts from Banyoles. The local programme also includes works on Jordi Savall, the makina anthem Flying Free, Remei de Ca la Fresca and the concerts of Spain’s Transition to democracy.

Much more than screenings

Music will also be heard live: there will be DJ warm-ups and performances by artists in the cinemas themselves. Through In-Edit Lab, the festival offers more than a dozen professional and training activities, all free of charge.

A festival born in Barcelona that has travelled the world

Founded in Barcelona in 2003, In-Edit was a pioneer in championing the music documentary as a genre with its own voice. Today its motto, Big stories for the big screen, travels to Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Gijón and the Empordà, and throughout the year its catalogue can be enjoyed at CaixaForum. It is one of those events that perfectly capture cultural Barcelona: curious, open to the world and proud of its local talent.

We hope you enjoy it, and we will be delighted to make your stay unforgettable!
