The great colour of Aitona & Lleida
Experience the great colour of Aitona and Lleida – the perfect day trip from Barcelona
Aitona has become a popular destination for day trips from Barcelona.
The Bajo Segre region of Catalonia is an agricultural landscape mainly known for fishing. However, in spring, the landscape changes, the trees bloom and the fields turn pink, announcing the arrival of peaches. A fleeting and unique spectacle that the village of Aitona promotes. In 2011, the town hall of this town of 2300 inhabitants launched a tourism project around the fruit in order to revitalize the agricultural region economically. The aim is to discover fruit growing while promoting the heritage of Aitona and its gastronomy.
The city offers different routes by bus, bike, on foot, and by quad or hot air balloon, so there are plenty of opportunities to take the perfect pictures and videos for Instagram. During these group excursions, you have access to private fields where the farmers explain their work. In the company of a knowledgeable local guide, you can then visit the heritage of the city.
During flowering, the whole village celebrates. The restaurants offer special menus to discover local products, especially fish, which is central to the town’s economy. You can even try your hand at being a farmer during a visit by harvesting the peaches – not forgetting the tasting at the end.
The beautiful and ancient city of Lleida
The historic town of Lleida is another excellent destination for a Barcelona spring break.
The various monuments and the cathedral testify to the interesting history of this city.
Overlooking the city, La Seu Vella and Suda Castle offer views of the surrounding area. At the foot of the hill, a pedestrian promenade leads visitors to discover many fascinating shops in the old town, located in striking and iconic buildings. To the west, the castle of Gardeny is perched on a hill and dominates the town and the surrounding countryside.
The city has attractive parks and botanical gardens to visit, perfect for a stroll in the fresh air, as well as several fascinating museums with exhibits about the city’s past.
