A tribute to the vocation of welcoming with heart and dedication

Today, July 29th, we celebrate the feast of Saint Martha, widely recognized as the patron saint of hospitality. Her figure, deeply linked to the art of welcoming, serving, and caring for others, holds special meaning for those of us working in the fields of hospitality and service.

Why is Saint Martha the patron saint of hospitality?

The name Martha means “lady” or “head of the household”, and in biblical texts, she is portrayed as an active, generous and hospitable woman. She lived in Bethany, a small village near Jerusalem, with her sister Mary and brother Lazarus. The Gospel tells us that Jesus had great love for this family.

Whenever Jesus and his disciples traveled through Judea, they always found a safe and welcoming refuge at Martha’s home — a room prepared and a warm reception. Martha would tend to her guests with care: preparing meals, organizing the home, and offering rest. For this reason, she is considered an example of devoted service, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality.

A memorable moment: serving from the heart

One of the most well-known Gospel scenes shows Martha feeling overwhelmed as she prepares everything for the arrival of Jesus and his companions. While she serves tirelessly, her sister Mary sits at the feet of the Master, listening intently. Frustrated, Martha says:

“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Jesus replies gently:
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. Only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

With this response, Jesus does not criticize Martha’s work, but rather invites her to also make space for what truly matters. This scene represents the balance between attentive service and spiritual nourishment — a duality that remains essential in hospitality today.

The Brotherhood of Saint Martha in Barcelona

In Barcelona, Saint Martha has held a special place since the 15th century. The Brotherhood of Saint Martha, founded in 1434, is based at the majestic Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, where an altar is dedicated in her honor.

This Gothic temple, located in the Ribera district, was built thanks to the collective efforts of the neighborhood’s residents. Particularly remembered are the bastaixos, who carried heavy stones on their backs from Montjuïc and the port to the church’s construction site. Santa Maria del Mar, like Saint Martha herself, symbolizes the strength of humble labor and community spirit.

A meaningful celebration

Today more than ever, Saint Martha embodies the values that define the world of hospitality: dedication, warmth, service, care, and vocation. At Hotel Continental, we celebrate this day as a tribute to all those who, day after day, make our hotels a true home for those who visit us.

A family tradition with deep roots

The Malagarriga Vallet family, owners of Hotel Continental, have upheld a long-standing hotel tradition dating back to 1826. All the generations that came before us — and those of us who continue the legacy — are members of the Brotherhood of Saint Martha. This expresses not only our professional commitment and our pride in belonging to a family with nearly two centuries of tradition in hospitality, but also our spiritual connection to this inspiring figure.

Since 1826, we have maintained an active relationship with the Brotherhood, taking part in its annual gatherings and celebrations, and honoring a tradition that elevates the profession and celebrates it as a true calling.

That’s why today we will attend the special mass at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, where new members will be welcomed into the Brotherhood. Afterwards, we’ll gather for a fellowship dinner at Hotel Rey Don Jaime in Castelldefels — a joyful moment to celebrate and share our vocation.

May the spirit of Saint Martha continue to inspire all those who, with love and dedication, turn the art of welcoming into a true vocation.
