Montjuïc is probably one of the largest urban parks in Europe, covering an area of 376 hectares, located on the southern coast of Barcelona, part of the Sants-Montjuïc district. The mountain stands at 177 meters above sea level. Its name’s etymology is attributed to the “Mountain of the Jews,” supposedly from medieval Catalan due to the existence of a Jewish cemetery.

In this article, you will discover the five most fascinating attractions that make Montjuïc a multifaceted treasure: from its lush botanical garden to the majestic National Palace, home to the National Art Museum of Catalonia, passing through the iconic Olympic Stadium currently serving as a temporary venue for Barça while Camp Nou is under construction.

Accessing Montjuïc Mountain is an attraction in itself. From Av. Del Paral·lel (Metro Line L2 Paral·lel) in Barcelona, you can take the Montjuïc Funicular, which operates like a metro and has two stops: Paral·lel, connecting with Metro Lines L2 and L3, and Parc de Montjuïc, located on the mountain, which connects to the cable car to reach the top of Montjuïc and access the castle.

Alternatively, the Montjuïc Cable Car connects Parc de Montjuïc directly to Castell de Montjuïc, with no intermediate stops. On the return journey, you can optionally stop at Mirador de l’Alcalde, ideal for enjoying the gardens with panoramic views of Barcelona. The journey ends back at Parc de Montjuïc, although you can also descend on foot from the viewpoint to the park.
