Son ilustres hu\u00e9spedes del Hotel Continental Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Llegaron por primera vez en diciembre de 1936, justo cuando se inici\u00f3 la Guerra Civil Espa\u00f1ola (1936-1939).<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7301 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/HCB-Orwell-fachada.jpg\" alt=\" hotel continental Orwell\" width=\"613\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/HCB-Orwell-fachada.jpg 613w, https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/HCB-Orwell-fachada-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 la pareja de Orwell elige el Hotel Continental?<\/h2>\n<p>En aquel entonces, nuestro Hotel ocupaba todo el edificio de La Rambla 140 y probablemente nos eligi\u00f3 por encontrarnos en Las Ramblas tocando a Plaza Catalunya, dos lugares que visitaba frecuentemente y que le entusiasmaban. As\u00ed lo explica en su libro \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homage_to_Catalonia\">Homenaje a Catalunya<\/a>\u201d, cuya primera edici\u00f3n fue publicada en 1938.<\/p>\n<p>Durante la guerra, el Hotel Continental fue colectivizado y convertido en sede del gobierno local. La primera impresi\u00f3n de Orwel, tal y como relata en su obra, fue especialmente triunfal:<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEl aspecto de Barcelona resultaba sorprendente e irresistible. Era la primera vez en mi vida que estaba en una ciudad donde la clase trabajadora ten\u00eda el mando.<\/p>\n<p>Casi todos los edificios estaban en poder de los obreros y cubiertos con banderas rojas o rojinegras; en todas las paredes hab\u00eda hoces, martillos y las iniciales de los partidos revolucionarios. [&#8230;] A lo largo de las Ramblas, la ancha arteria del centro de la ciudad por donde circulaba un r\u00edo interminable de gente, los altavoces atronaban las canciones revolucionarias durante todo el d\u00eda y hasta bien entrada la noche.\u00bb<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7294\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/orwell-homage-to-catalonia.jpg\" alt=\"orwell homage to catalonia hotel continental barcelona\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/orwell-homage-to-catalonia.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/orwell-homage-to-catalonia-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/orwell-homage-to-catalonia-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>\u00abHomenaje a Catalu\u00f1a\u00bb escrito desde el Hotel Continental Barcelona<\/h2>\n<p>Fue precisamente en el Hotel Continental donde Orwell escribi\u00f3 gran parte de este \u201cHomenaje a Catalu\u00f1a\u201d. Un relato personal sobre su experiencia durante la Guerra Civil espa\u00f1ola, escrito en primera persona.<\/p>\n<p>Orwell sirvi\u00f3 tanto como soldado raso como oficial en partes de Catalu\u00f1a y Arag\u00f3n desde diciembre de 1936 hasta junio de 1937.<\/p>\n<p>En mayo de 1937, el partido pol\u00edtico en el que militaba, el POUM, un partido comunista antiestalinista, fue declarado ilegal y se vio forzado a huir o a enfrentarse al encarcelamiento.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed fue como en la madrugada del 23 de junio de 1937 Eileen y George se marcharon del Continental escapando de Barcelona.<\/p>\n<h2>Orwell recibi\u00f3 la visita de JF Kennedy e Indira Gandhi en el Hotel Continental<\/h2>\n<p>Es interesante se\u00f1alar que durante su estancia con nosotros, el matrimonio Orwell recibi\u00f3 la visita de dos j\u00f3venes estudiantes de 21 a\u00f1os que acudieron a Barcelona para conocer mejor la situaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica que se viv\u00eda en Espa\u00f1a y en Europa.<\/p>\n<p>Recordemos que ya se estaban tejiendo algunos de las causas que derivaron en la Segundo Guerra Mundial. Se trata de dos personajes que, a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, conseguir\u00edan las posiciones m\u00e1s altas en pol\u00edtica en sus respectivos pa\u00edses: se trata de la hija de Nerhu, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indira_Gandhi\">Indira Gandhi<\/a>, y del hijo del embajador de los EEUU en Inglaterra, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_F._Kennedy\">John F. Kennedy<\/a>, futuro presidente de los Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<h2>Homenaje a la esposa de Orwell: Eileen O&#8217;Shaughnessy<\/h2>\n<p>En esta publicaci\u00f3n queremos rendir homenaje a su mujer, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eileen_Blair\">Eileen O&#8217;Shaughnessy<\/a>, quien la historia ha invisibilizado y cuyo papel fue primordial para la obra y legado de George Orwell.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abAhora\u00bb, le dijo George a un amigo la noche que conoci\u00f3 a Eileen O\u2019Shaughnessy, \u00abesa es la clase de chica con la que me gustar\u00eda casarme\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>El a\u00f1o anterior, Eileen hab\u00eda publicado un poema futurista llamado \u00abFin del siglo, 1984.\u00bb M\u00e1s tarde, George nombrar\u00eda su mejor obra, 1984, en homenaje a la memoria de Eileen.<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7289\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Eilleen-orwell.jpg\" alt=\"Eilleen Orwell Continental Barcelona Hotel \" width=\"877\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Eilleen-orwell.jpg 877w, https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Eilleen-orwell-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.hotelcontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Eilleen-orwell-768x398.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>La primera biograf\u00eda de Eilleen publicada por Sylvia Topp<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unbound.com\/books\/eileen\/\">\u201cEileen: The Making of Orwell\u201d<\/a> es la primera biograf\u00eda de Eileen Orwell escrita por <a href=\"http:\/\/sylviatopp\/\">Sylvia Topp<\/a>.
