Conceived by Richard Wagner himself in 1876 in the city of Bayreuth, it has been held every summer since then. It is one of the hardest world events to get tickets for (with a waiting list of up to seven years). The finest Wagner performers, including singers and musicians, take part therein. In 1955, as a milestone event, the festival travelled outside Germany to visit the Liceu, an occasion which deeply moved the city of Barcelona. More than fifty years have elapsed and the festival has chosen to visit the Liceu once again in September.
