Another way to savor Barcelona!

Barcelona is a city that must be savoured. And there’s no better place to begin discovering its flavours, colours and customs than in its municipal markets. Beyond what they offer to the eye, these are living spaces that reflect the city’s history, diversity and identity.

Much more than La Boqueria

The Mercat de Sant Josep, popularly known as La Boqueria, is undoubtedly the most famous market in Barcelona, and it is located just a few steps from Hotel Continental Barcelona, on La Rambla. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century, and its iconic iron and glass structure, typical of Catalan modernism, made it a city landmark. However, nowadays La Boqueria has lost part of its original spirit: the excess of tourism has transformed many of its traditional stalls into takeaway food spots, drifting away from its original role as a neighbourhood market.

That’s why, from Hotel Continental, we encourage you to explore other lesser-known, more authentic and quieter markets, where you can enjoy a truly local experience. They’re ideal for getting to know other areas of the city, with a warm atmosphere and top-quality products.

A bit of history: markets with soul and unique modernist architecture

The tradition of markets in Barcelona dates back to Roman times, when trade already took place outside the gates of the walled city. Over the centuries, markets have served as hubs of exchange, meeting points and key elements in urban life.

In the 19th century, as the city grew and the Eixample district was developed—where you’ll find our Hotel Continental Palacete—large covered markets were built, many of them featuring spectacular wrought-iron structures, reddish stone and glass ceilings that continue to amaze us today. They are living examples of Catalan modernism and how architecture can serve the community.

Here are 7 markets we recommend discovering

We encourage you to explore these other markets, all easily accessible by metro or bus from the hotel:

  1. Mercat de Sants
Housed in a beautiful modernist building with an impressive exposed-brick façade, it’s one of the most active markets in the neighbourhood. You’ll find family-run stalls offering fresh, organic and high-quality products in a friendly and authentic atmosphere.
  2. Mercat d’Hostafrancs
Very close to the Sants market, this is one of the oldest in the city. Its metal structure and local vibe make it a hidden gem, little known to most visitors.
  3. Mercat de Galvany
Located in the elegant Sant Gervasi neighbourhood, its building stands out for its beauty and elegance. It’s perfect for discovering gourmet products and enjoying the relaxed pace of local life. Don’t miss breakfast at “Mantequerías Pirenaicas”—they make the best tortillas in Barcelona!
  4. Mercat de Sarrià
Small, cosy and full of history, this market offers a warm and intimate experience, ideal for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre and discover the most peaceful side of Barcelona.
  5. Mercat de Santa Caterina
Located in the Born district, very close to the cathedral, it is famous for its colourful undulating roof. Although it’s in a central area, it maintains a balance between the local and the touristic, with an excellent selection of fresh produce and ready-to-eat dishes. Inside, you’ll find the “Cuines de Santa Catalina” restaurant—highly recommended.
  6. Mercat del Ninot
Situated in the left Eixample, this market has been completely renovated and combines tradition with modernity. Spacious, convenient and with a wide range of specialised stalls, it’s perfect for exploring Catalan and Mediterranean gastronomy.
  7. Mercat de la Concepció
Also located in the Eixample, this market stands out for its iron and glass structure. It’s a quiet place, with a charming flower shop and a relaxed atmosphere that allows you to observe everyday life in the city. Don’t miss the nearby Church of la Concepció and its magnificent cloister.

Much more than shopping: a treat for the senses

Visiting a market in Barcelona is not just about buying food. It’s about chatting with the people behind the stalls, learning about local and seasonal products, discovering traditional recipes, and experiencing the city from within.

Moreover, these markets are a living example of the commitment to local commerce and the preservation of cultural and gastronomic heritage. They represent a way of consuming that supports small businesses and the families who, day after day, make it possible for fresh and lovingly prepared food to reach our tables.
