A perfect plan for those who wish to discover Barcelona’s greener side

When we think of Barcelona Zoo, we often associate it with a family activity. And indeed, it is one of the favourite attractions for visitors travelling with children. However, the zoo can also be a surprising experience for couples, groups of friends or anyone looking to enjoy a relaxing day surrounded by nature in the heart of Barcelona.

Located within the iconic Ciutadella Park, Barcelona Zoo offers the opportunity to get closer to the fascinating animal world while enjoying a pleasant outdoor experience among gardens, century-old trees and wide green spaces.

A green oasis in the centre of Barcelona

Opened in 1892, the zoo forms part of one of the city’s most emblematic parks: Ciutadella Park. This large green space combines history, heritage, nature and tranquillity, making it a favourite destination for both residents and visitors.

For this reason, we recommend setting aside several hours for your visit and combining your time at the zoo with a leisurely stroll through the park. Enjoy some of its most famous attractions, such as the spectacular Monumental Cascade, the lake where you can rent rowing boats, its tree-lined avenues and its beautiful gardens. And, of course, do not miss the famous Dona del Paraigua (The Lady with the Umbrella), an elegant sculpture created in 1884 by Joan Roig Soler and located beside one of the ponds near the zoo entrance.

Outside the zoo grounds, be sure to visit one of the park’s most curious and photographed landmarks: the Mammoth sculpture. This life-sized reproduction, installed in 1907, has become one of Ciutadella Park’s most beloved icons and a favourite photo stop for visitors of all ages.

Animals from around the world

Barcelona Zoo is home to hundreds of animals representing species from different continents. During your visit, you may observe giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, reptiles, exotic birds, primates and many other animals that showcase the extraordinary diversity of wildlife across the globe.

The visit also offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of biodiversity conservation and respect for nature. The zoo participates in various conservation, research and environmental education programmes, helping to raise awareness about the protection of numerous species.

Remembering Snowflake

Any mention of Barcelona Zoo inevitably brings to mind Snowflake (Copito de Nieve), the world’s only known albino gorilla. He lived at the zoo for more than three decades and became one of the most beloved symbols of Barcelona.

Although he is no longer with us, his legacy remains an important part of the zoo’s history and of the memories of countless visitors who came to Barcelona during those years.

An ideal visit at any time of year

Thanks to Barcelona’s Mediterranean climate, the zoo can be enjoyed throughout the year. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant due to their mild temperatures, although the zoo is also an excellent option during the summer months thanks to the many shaded areas provided by Ciutadella Park.

Today, both Barcelona Zoo and Ciutadella Park are undergoing various improvement and renovation projects that will continue to make these spaces more accessible and better adapted to the needs of visitors and animals alike.
