The most famous bank robbery in the history of Spain

And, in this sense, today we want to share you about one of the most outstanding events in Barcelona in the 1980s: the robbery of the Central Bank on Saturday, May 23, 1981, just three months after the failed coup attempt.

This famous robbery, carried out by a group of highly organized criminals, has been considered one of the most spectacular in the history of Spain. The Central Bank was one of the most important financial institutions in the country at that time, and was located in the heart of the city, in Plaza Catalunya an in a building that at the beginning of the 20th century had been occupied by the current Hotel Continental.
A summary of the main facts
A dozen robbers broke into the bank one Saturday morning, detaining all the workers and customers who were there. The robbery itself had two objectives, on one hand, the purely pecuniary, about 600 million pesetas were robbed and, on the other, to rescue for their interests some documents that compromised the entire history of what had happened in Madrid three months ago and that could have shaken Spanish democracy: the 1981 coup d’état. The bank robbery turned out badly for the criminals who, as a result of the nerves caused by losing one of them because of a shot by a police sniper, ended up walking out the door. Of course, before leaving, they forced them to exchange clothes with those of the employees or clients to confuse the police on their way out.

The event experienced from the Continental Hotel
The Continental hotel, which is located right next to the Bank, was besieged and hotel guests and workers could not enter or leave. Teresa, the receptionist, was working that Saturday morning and was unable to leave the hotel until the bank was released.
When the denouement occurred, client workers and criminals ran out of the bank doors and the police forced them to lie on the ground. 5 men took a risk and decided to run down the Ramblas and entered the first portal they found, that was, the Continental hotel. They arrived at the reception and told Teresa very nervous that they were bank workers and that they had just escaped and if they could have a bathroom to clean up. She very promptly agreed and showed them the courtesy bathroom and, since there were 5 of them, she opened a nearby room for them. While all this was happening, one of the men disappeared and hid in the corridors of the hotel. While the four men were in the bathroom. Very perceptive, Teresa called the police reporting that some men had entered from the bank. The police showed up and took them… all except the one who had hidden.
By Sunday night, things were more or less back to normal. And our Father, José María Malagarriga Miralbell, was able to go to the hotel to see how Teresa was and so she was also able to go home, after the scare and the situation she experienced.
Pilar Vallet, wife of José María and our mother, is also the living protagonist of this story. When she went to the hotel to work early Monday morning, when she was dismantling a room to do some sewing work, she found 300,000 pesetas and a gun charger under the mattress. This amount was half of what the bank robbers managed to steal: 600,000 pesetas (approx. 3,600 euros). These 300,000 pesetas were all the loot that was recovered from the robbery: Our mother, as a good person, did not hesitate to call the police to come and she gave that money to the authorities.
That same Monday, a little later, my mother was inspecting the corridors of the hotel, suddenly, in a small room with vacuum cleaners, a man appeared to her. Surprised, the two stood still, he uttered “for our children” and ran away: that was the only robber who was never tried for the crime. He fled to France and did not return…
And nowadays
Today, the building where the Central Bank was located has been converted into a huge clothing store. In addition, references to this famous robbery can still be found in the city of Barcelona, ??such as the film about the events entitled Atraco al Banco Central (1983) or the film “El Lobo” (2004) that recreates the story of one of the robbers who participated in the robbery.

El más famoso atraco a un banco de la historia de España
Como uno de los hoteles más emblemáticos e históricos de Barcelona, en Hotel Continental nos apasiona la historia y la cultura de nuestra vibrante y querida ciudad. Y, en este sentido, hoy queremos hablarles sobre uno de los sucesos más destacados de la Barcelona de los años 80: el atraco al Banco Central el sábado 23 de mayo de 1981, justo tres meses después del intento fallidodel golpe de estado.
La sede del Banco Central había sido el Hotel Continental a principios del Siglo XX
Este famoso robo, llevado a cabo por un grupo de delincuentes altamente organizados, ha sido considerado uno de los más espectaculares de la historia de España. El Banco Central era una de las instituciones financieras más importantes del país en aquel entonces, y se encontraba en pleno corazón de la ciudad, en un edificio que a principios del siglo XX había sido ocupado por el actual Hotel Continental.
Un resumen de los principales hechos
Una decena de atracadores penetraron en el banco un sábado por la mañana reteniendo a todos los trabajadores y clientes que allí se encontraban. El atraco en si tenía dos objetivos, por un lado, el meramente pecuniario, unos 600 millones de pesetas y, por otro, el rescatar para sus intereses unos documentos que comprometían toda la historia de lo que había sucedido en Madrid tres meses atrás y que podía haber hecho temblar la democracia española: el golpe de estado de 1981. El atraco al banco se torció para los delincuentes que, como consecuencia de los nervios provocados al perder a uno de los suyos por un tiro de un francotirador de la policía, acabaron saliendo por la puerta. Eso sí, antes de salir obligaron a intercambiar sus ropas con las de los empleados o clientes para confundir a la policía a su salida.

El suceso vivido desde el Hotel Continental
El hotel Continental que se encuentra justo al lado del Banco, estuvo sitiado y los huéspedes y trabajadores del hotel no podían ni entrar ni salir. Teresa, la recepcionista, estuvo trabajando ese sábado por la mañana y no pudo salir del hotel hasta que el banco fue liberado.
Cuando se produjo el desenlace, trabajadores clientes y delincuentes salieron corriendo por las puertas del banco y la policía les obligaba a tirarse al suelo. 5 hombres se arriesgaron y decidieron correr Ramblas abajo y se metieron el primer portal que pudieron, es decir el hotel Continental. Llegaron a recepción y le dijeron muy nerviosos a Teresa que eran trabajadores del banco y que acababan de escapar y si podían tener un baño para asearse. Ella, muy solicita asintió y les mostró el baño de cortesía y, como eran 5, les abrió una habitación cercana. Mientras sucedía todo esto, uno de los hombres desapareció y se encondió por los pasillos del hotel. Mientras los cuatro hombres estaban en el baño. Muy perspicaz, Teresa llamó a la policía informando de que habían entrado unos hombres procedentes del banco. La policía se personó y se los llevo… a todos menos al que se había escondido.

En la noche del domingo, las cosas ya volvieron más o menos a la normalidad. Y nuestro Padre José María Malagarriga Miralbell pudo ir al hotel a ver cómo estaba Teresa y así ésta también pudo irse a su casa, después del susto y la situación vivida.
Pilar Vallet, esposa de José María y nuestra madre, es también protagonista viva de esta historia. Cuando el lunes a primera hora fue al hotel a trabajar, al desmontar una habitación para hacer unos trabajos de costura encontró debajo del colchón 300.000 pesetas y un cargador de pistola. Esta cantidad era la mitad de lo que consiguieron sustraer los atracadores del banco: 600.000 pesetas (3.600 euros aprox.). Estas 300.000 pesetas fue todo el botín que se recuperó del atraco: Nuestra madre, como buena persona, no dudo en llamar a la policía para que lo vinieran a buscar.
Ese mismo lunes, un poco más tarde, inspeccionando mi madre los pasillos del hotel, de repente, en un pequeño cuarto de aspiradores le apareció un hombre. Sorprendidos los dos se quedaron parados, él le profirió un “por nuestros hijos” y se fue corriendo: ese, fue el único atracador que jamás fue juzgado por el delito. Huyo a Francia y no regresó…
Y ahora…
Hoy en día, el edificio donde se encontraba el Banco Central se ha convertido en una enorme tienda de ropa. Además, en la ciudad de Barcelona todavía se pueden encontrar referencias a este famoso robo, como la película de los hechos de título Atraco al Banco Central (1983) o la película “El Lobo” (2004) que recrea la historia de uno de los ladrones que participó en el atraco.
En definitiva, el atraco al Banco Central de Barcelona en 1981 es una historia fascinante que forma parte de la historia de esta maravillosa ciudad.
