Until January 13 you can enjoy the exhibition “Picasso-Picabia. The painting in question “ in the MAPFRE Casa Garriga Nogués Foundation Room (250 Diputació street) just 3 minutes walking distance from our Hotel Continental Palacete.
The exhibition, which consists of 150 pieces, covers the history of art since 1910. The Cubism birth moment, passes through Dadaism in 1915. Picabia is one of its greatest exponents and ends with the last stage of Picasso (1973) through a selection of canvases in which the painter returns to the human figure; and also, in the final period of Picabia, who in 1953 stopped by reducing the act of painting subtle monochromes dotted with dots.
A rich pictorial and graphic arts exhibition (documents, photos, letters and magazines) of these two contemporary painters. Picasso and Picabia often confused because of the similarity of their surnames and the outline of their works. The photographs that we include in the article are proof of this.
Both Picasso and Picabia sought to challenge the conventionalisms of the time with their paintings, challenge established art. Both “murdered the painting” adopting a form that sought to rejuvenate and transgress.
The museum offers guided tours in Spanish, Catalan and, in the case of groups, can be requested in English. It also has workshops for children and adults to complement the visit, understand better and enjoy first-hand art during your stay in Barcelona.
The place that hosts the exhibition is “La Casa Garriga Nogués”, a building built by Enric Sagnier between 1902 and 1904, commissioned by the banker Ruperto Garriga-Nogués and where he lived with his family on the main floor until 1936. Year when the Spanish Civil War broke out (1936-1939). In 2004 it was bought by the Godia family and since 2015, the Mapfre Foundation manages the celebration of numerous and relevant exhibitions and workshops related to art and culture.
Picasso and his passion for Barcelona
Picasso was born in the city of Malaga in 1881. The first time Picasso visited Barcelona was at the age of 13. It is in Barcelona where he enjoys his first youth sprees. Barcelona fascinates Picasso. The city where his talent began to be recognized and where he set up his first studio on Calle de la Plata. His first engraving entitled “L’àpat frugal” (frugal meal) was published as an illustration in the weekly “L’Esquella de la Torratxa”. It was in Barcelona where he also made his first exhibition in “Els Quatre Gats”, an emblematic restaurant of the city that still exists today. At 22, Picasso leaves for Paris and only returns to Barcelona “occasionally to visit his mother and sister.

[:es]Picasso a 3 minutos del Hotel Continental Palacete. Nunca Picasso había estado tan cerca del Hotel Continental Palacete. Hasta el 13 de enero puede disfrutar de la exposición “Picasso-Picabia. La pintura en cuestión” en la Sala Fundación MAPFRE Casa Garriga Nogués (calle diputación 250) justo a 3 minutos andando desde nuestro Hotel Continental Palacete.
La muestra, que consta de 150 piezas, recorre la historia del arte desde 1910, momento de nacimiento del cubismo, pasa por el dadaísmo en 1915, siendo Picabia uno de sus mayores exponentes y finaliza con la última etapa de Picasso (1973) a través de una selección de lienzos en los que el pintor regresa a la figura humana; y también, en la época final de Picabia, quien en 1953 se detiene reduciendo el acto de pintar a sutiles monocromos salpicados por puntos.
Una rica exposición pictórica y de artes gráficas (documentos, fotos, cartas y revistas) de estos dos pintores coetáneos. Picasso y Picabia a menudo les confundía por la similitud de sus apellidos y por el trazo de sus obras. Las fotografías que incluimos en el artículo son prueba de ello.
Tanto Picasso com Picabia pretendían desafiar con sus pinturas los convencionalismos de la época, retar el arte establecido. Ambos “asesinaron la pintura” adoptando una forma que pretendía rejuvenecerla y transgredir en la época.
El museo ofrece visitas guiadas en español, catalán y, en caso de grupos, pueden solicitarse en inglés. Además cuenta con talleres para niños y adultos para complementar la visita, entender mejor y disfrutar en primera persona del arte durante su estancia en Barcelona.
El lugar que acoge la exposición, es “La Casa Garriga Nogués”, un edificio construido por Enric Sagnier entre 1902 y 1904, por encargo del banquero Ruperto Garriga-Nogués y en donde residió con su familia en el piso principal hasta 1936. Año en que estalló la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939). En 2004 fue comprado por la familia Godia y en desde 2015, la Fundación Mapfre gestiona la celebración de numerosas y relevantes exposiciones y talleres relacionados con el arte y la cultura.
Picasso y su pasión por Barcelona
