Orwell couple is part of Hotel Continental history
George Orwell and his wife Eileen O’Shaughnessy are part of our history. They are illustrious guests of the Hotel Continental Barcelona. They arrived for the first time in December 1936, just when the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) began.
Why Orwell couple choose Hotel Continental?
At that time, our hotel occupied the entire building of La Rambla 140 and probably Orwell chose us because we were in Las Ramblas corner with Plaza Catalunya, two places that he visited frequently and that excited him. This is explained in his book “Homage to Catalonia”, whose first edition was published in 1938.
During the war, the Continental Hotel was collectivized and converted into a seat of local government. Orwel’s first impression, as he relates in his work, was especially triumphant:
“The appearance of Barcelona was surprising and irresistible: it was the first time in my life that I was in a city where the working class was in charge, almost all the buildings were in the hands of the workers and covered with red or red and black flags; the walls had sickles, hammers and the initials of the revolutionary parties. […] Along the Ramblas, the wide artery of the center of the city where an endless river of people circulated, the loudspeakers thundered the revolutionary songs during all day long into the night. ”

It was precisely at the Continental Hotel where Orwell wrote much of this “Homage to Catalonia.” A personal story about his experience during the Spanish Civil War, written in first person. Orwell served as both a private and official in parts of Catalonia and Aragon from December 1936 to June 1937. In May 1937, the political party in which he was active, the POUM, an anti-Stalinist communist party, was declared illegal and he was found forced to flee or face imprisonment.
That’s how at dawn on June 23, 1937 Eileen and George left the Continental escaping from Barcelona.
Orwell received the visit of JF Kennedy and Indira Gandhi at the Continental Hotel
It is interesting to note that during their stay with us, the Orwell couple received the visit of two 21-year-old students who came to Barcelona to learn more about the political situation in Spain and Europe. Remember that some of the causes that led to the Second World War were already being woven. These were two people who, years later, would get the highest positions in politics in their respective countries: it is the daughter of Nerhu, Indira Gandhi, and the son of the US ambassador to England, John F. Kennedy, future president of the United States.
Homage to Orwell’s wife: Eileen O’Shaughnessy
In this post we want to pay homage to his wife, Eileen O’Shaughnessy, whom history has invisibilized and whose role was paramount for the work and legacy of George Orwell.
“Now,” George told a friend the night he met Eileen O’Shaughnessy, “that’s the kind of girl I’d like to marry.” The previous year, Eileen had published a futuristic poem called “End of the century, 1984.” Later, George would name his best work, 1984, in homage to Eileen’s memory.
Eilleen’s first biography published by Sylvia Topp
“Eileen: The Making of Orwell” is the first biography of Eileen Orwell written by Sylvia Topp. A lover of Orwell who wanted to know the profile and life of the woman he had chosen. An untold story about the life of George Orwell’s first wife, a woman who shaped, supported and even saved his life.
The book is a living image of Bohemism “modernist prose”, poverty, political commitment and sexual freedom in the 30s and 40s, with an outburst of sadness. A moving story that offers a completely new perspective on Orwell himself.
Eileen was an extraordinary woman, whose nine-year marriage to Orwell went from a small town where they grew vegetables and cared for their own goats and chickens, to live together the dangers of the Spanish Civil War, to take care of George in Morocco after a serious attack of tuberculous bleeding, and narrowly escaping the destruction of his apartment in London in World War II. Together they adopted a baby when it became clear that they could not have their own child.
Both died at an early age, Eileen at 39 years of age during an operation and Orwell with 47 years of tuberculosis.
With no doubt, their union has been the site of one of the best works of English literature of the twentieth century.

La pareja Orwell son parte de la historia del Hotel Continental
George Orwell y su esposa Eileen O’Shaughnessy forman parte de nuestra historia. Son ilustres huéspedes del Hotel Continental Barcelona.
Llegaron por primera vez en diciembre de 1936, justo cuando se inició la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939).
¿Por qué la pareja de Orwell elige el Hotel Continental?
En aquel entonces, nuestro Hotel ocupaba todo el edificio de La Rambla 140 y probablemente nos eligió por encontrarnos en Las Ramblas tocando a Plaza Catalunya, dos lugares que visitaba frecuentemente y que le entusiasmaban. Así lo explica en su libro “Homenaje a Catalunya”, cuya primera edición fue publicada en 1938.
Durante la guerra, el Hotel Continental fue colectivizado y convertido en sede del gobierno local. La primera impresión de Orwel, tal y como relata en su obra, fue especialmente triunfal:
“El aspecto de Barcelona resultaba sorprendente e irresistible. Era la primera vez en mi vida que estaba en una ciudad donde la clase trabajadora tenía el mando.
Casi todos los edificios estaban en poder de los obreros y cubiertos con banderas rojas o rojinegras; en todas las paredes había hoces, martillos y las iniciales de los partidos revolucionarios. […] A lo largo de las Ramblas, la ancha arteria del centro de la ciudad por donde circulaba un río interminable de gente, los altavoces atronaban las canciones revolucionarias durante todo el día y hasta bien entrada la noche.”
“Homenaje a Cataluña” escrito desde el Hotel Continental Barcelona
Fue precisamente en el Hotel Continental donde Orwell escribió gran parte de este “Homenaje a Cataluña”. Un relato personal sobre su experiencia durante la Guerra Civil española, escrito en primera persona.
Orwell sirvió tanto como soldado raso como oficial en partes de Cataluña y Aragón desde diciembre de 1936 hasta junio de 1937.
En mayo de 1937, el partido político en el que militaba, el POUM, un partido comunista antiestalinista, fue declarado ilegal y se vio forzado a huir o a enfrentarse al encarcelamiento.
Así fue como en la madrugada del 23 de junio de 1937 Eileen y George se marcharon del Continental escapando de Barcelona.
Orwell recibió la visita de JF Kennedy e Indira Gandhi en el Hotel Continental
Es interesante señalar que durante su estancia con nosotros, el matrimonio Orwell recibió la visita de dos jóvenes estudiantes de 21 años que acudieron a Barcelona para conocer mejor la situación política que se vivía en España y en Europa.
Recordemos que ya se estaban tejiendo algunos de las causas que derivaron en la Segundo Guerra Mundial. Se trata de dos personajes que, años más tarde, conseguirían las posiciones más altas en política en sus respectivos países: se trata de la hija de Nerhu, Indira Gandhi, y del hijo del embajador de los EEUU en Inglaterra, John F. Kennedy, futuro presidente de los Estados Unidos.
Homenaje a la esposa de Orwell: Eileen O’Shaughnessy
En esta publicación queremos rendir homenaje a su mujer, Eileen O’Shaughnessy, quien la historia ha invisibilizado y cuyo papel fue primordial para la obra y legado de George Orwell.
“Ahora”, le dijo George a un amigo la noche que conoció a Eileen O’Shaughnessy, “esa es la clase de chica con la que me gustaría casarme”.
El año anterior, Eileen había publicado un poema futurista llamado “Fin del siglo, 1984.” Más tarde, George nombraría su mejor obra, 1984, en homenaje a la memoria de Eileen.

“Eileen: The Making of Orwell” es la primera biografía de Eileen Orwell escrita por Sylvia Topp. Una enamorada de Orwell que quiso conocer el perfil y la vida de la mujer que había elegido.
Una historia jamás antes contada de la vida de la primera esposa de George Orwell, una mujer que le dio forma, apoyó e incluso le salvó la vida.
El libro es una imagen viva del bohemismo “la prosa modernista”, la pobreza, el compromiso político y la libertad sexual en los años 30 y 40, con un arrebato de tristeza.
Una conmovedora historia que ofrece una perspectiva completamente nueva sobre el propio Orwell.
Eileen fue una mujer extraordinaria, cuyo matrimonio de nueve años con Orwell transcurrió desde un pequeño pueblo donde cultivaban verduras y cuidaban sus propias cabras y pollos, a vivir juntos los peligros de la Guerra Civil Española, a cuidar a George en Marruecos después de un grave ataque de sangrado tuberculoso, y a escapar por poco de la destrucción de su apartamento en Londres en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Juntos adoptaron un bebé cuando se hizo evidente que no podían tener su propio hijo.
Ambos fallecieron a muy temprana edad, Eileen con 39 años durante una operación y Orwell con 47 años de tuberculosis.
Sin duda su unión ha dado lugar a una de las mejores obras la literatura inglesa del siglo XX.
