Castellers in Barcelona, the tradition of building human castles!

One of Catalonia’s most famous traditions is that of the “castells” (castles), which are human towers that are lifted by building different levels of people until reaching insane heights that can go up to ten stories. There is no mechanical help, and tens and even hundreds of people can take part in it. The “castellers” are the people who carry out this activity, which is over 200 years old.

Recently acknowledged as Immaterial Cultural Heritage by Unesco, his origin is believed to be around the area of Tarragona, Catalonia’s second most important province after Barcelona. During the 20th Century this practice spread all over Catalonia. The “castellers” are grouped in “colles” that normally take the name of its place of origin.

Una de las tradiciones más conocidas de Catalunya es la de los “castells”; torres humanas levantadas superponiendo diferentes niveles de gente hasta alcanzar alturas imposibles, que pueden llegar a los diez pisos. No hay ayuda mecánica, y llegan a participar decenas e incluso centenas de personas. Los “castellers” son los participantes de estas construcciones humanas.

Recientemente reconocidas como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la Unesco, la práctica tiene más de 200 años, situándose su origen en las tierras de Tarragona. Durante el siglo XX se extendió por toda Catalunya. Los castellers se agrupan en “collas” (conjuntos) que normalmente recogen el nombre de su población de origen.

Durante los próximos meses habrá actuaciones en Barcelona. Aquí os dejamos una lista de las próximas exhibiciones que habrá en el centro, por ejemplo, este fin de semana estarán en la Plaza de la Catedral de Barcelona a las 18.00h. No te lo pierdas!
