We are living an unprecedented situation
More than ever it’s time to thank all the people that put all effort to alleviate this difficult moment. The Continental Palacete: on call hotel in Barcelona, as we host guests that live all year at the hotel, it was established, with the Barcelona Hotel Guild agreement that the Hotel Continental Palacete would remain open for those who were forced to stay in the city during confinement caused by the Covid19.

A few days after the declaration of the state of alarm in Spain (14th March, 2020), we had the request of a group that was forced to spend a few nights in Barcelona in order to fly as soon as possible to India, their home country.
As a result of the closure of the airports in India, this group of 23 gentlemen is staying at our hotel resigned and patient, waiting for the Indian government to allow them to return to their country.

For almost a month now, in an exemplary way, this group from India has been respecting the protection and safety standards with patience, education and knowing how to be in a commendable manner. For this reason, we want to dedicate this post to honouring and thanking them for their attitude, which is undoubtedly essential to reduce any risk or undesirable situation.
We thought it was a nice idea to know how they are experiencing this situation in Barcelona, ??to give them a voice so that their feelings, emotions, desires, concerns reach our reading public and we can give them better support and understanding in these difficult times.
So we have asked them some questions that the group freely and kindly may answer to participate in this post.
Sharing experiences, feelings and hopes from our dear guests from India during confinement
1. How did you get to the Continental Palacete Hotel? What happened so you could not get to India?
Well it started on 21st March 2020, we are seafarers working on cruise line Pullmantur Cruises Spanish based Cruise Company.
On 20th March 2020, we were told that we will be disembarked next day and fly to India. On receiving the information we contacted the Human Resources on board saying that India has banned International flights in and out of India, to which they didn’t bother to take any action of help.
The next day we, 23 Indians, disembarked in port of Malaga early morning and were sent by bus from Malaga to Barcelona airport which is we guess 978kms approx. (10-11 hours’ drive). All the way there were no shops were opened because of Spain being in lockdown and we checked our tickets online in the port of Malaga which showed cancelled flights.
We contacted the HR department again but they convinced us that nothing was cancelled and to continue the journey to Barcelona and verify the flights at Barcelona airport helpdesk.
To this we stated that we will not get down from the bus and will contact Indian embassy as we don’t want to be stranded in the Airport, and then the company arranged us the Hotel in Barcelona: Continental Palacete.
The international ban imposed on international flights by India did not allow us to fly but the main reason is because our company didn’t follow the Indian government guidelines regarding flights being banned. Also the Indian embassy made sure of our stay here in the hotel.
2. How do you live this experience of confinement from the Continental Palacete?
The confinement in the hotel is appreciable, the hotel staff and reception has been really helpful, they are providing us food and basic amenities like sanitizers and gloves in the buffet area. The stay is mentally and physically very challenging and frustrating as we are scared and tired now. The stay has broken us physically too as we are undergoing traumatic stress and every second feels risky as there is no medical help in case one of us get sick.
3. What mechanisms are you using to overcome confinement from your room?
The methods to overcome the effects of this stay are mainly utilization of our mobile phones using the WIFI to be connected to home, Yoga, Little walk in the corridors. It is a very difficult and a very challenging situation for us as we are not home.
4. How does your family live the fact that you are far away?
Our family broke down into tears when they knew about our situation of being stuck in a Covid 19 pandemic situation like this in Spain as the country itself is under so much loss, pressure and deaths. Some of our family members are heart patients, have medical conditions and even a pregnant lady waiting home for her husband and she is alone by herself in the house back in India. Some of us haven’t told their family too about our situation here so as to not to create panic for them as they too are struggling the Covid 19 pandemic scare in India.
5. Where is your place of origin? How is the situation there at this moment?
We are from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi and a few more states in India. In total we are 23 Indian seaman. The situation in our place is that they are in lockdown and are opened from 7am to 1 pm only to buy essentials like food, medicines etc. India is also struggling with the current pandemic of Covid 19 and the cases are rising every day in numbers.
6. What message/s would you like to convey to the world to better overcome this stage?
The most important message at this hour to the world can be to stay home quarantined to keep other safe, also when this gets over human beings should act more responsible towards nature and also to each other. There needs to be more unity regardless of nationality, origin and we should help each other.
When something like this pandemic comes on human kind it doesn’t differentiate the rich or poor, male or female. Rather than spreading hate we should spread smile and warmth to people in need as it doesn’t cost a penny. Also we as seaman want to thank all the medical practitioners and law and order keepers like police, military and all those who are keeping the world safe in order in such a dreadful condition.
The message from us is that please follow the guidelines of the government and stay home for our own future and also for the future generations.
7. Share here what you want; we, from this post in our blog, would like to homage and thank you for your behaviour, your responsibility and your patience.
All we want through you to request government of Spain and government of India to expedite repatriation to our country in the safest manner. Also to bring our message to the different communities in Barcelona including Indian communities to reach out to us for help with some basic Indian groceries.
Last but not the least we want to thank the Indian embassy in Madrid, Indian ambassador Mr. Sanjay Verma and Second Secretary Mr. Manoj Kapur for all the help they have provided for our safety and also to the Hotel management. We want to reach home safely and for this all the help given to us will be appreciated.

Vivimos una época sin precedentes
Más que nunca es tiempo de agradecer a todas las personas que ponen todo su esfuerzo en hacer que la situación, ya de por si tan difícil, lo sea lo menos posible. El Continental Palacete, establecimiento de guardia en Barcelona al tener clientela que vive todo el año en el hotel y haber establecido con la inestimable colaboración y acuerdo con el Gremio de Hoteles de Barcelona, que nuestro Hotel Continental Palacete permanecería abierto para aquellas personas que se vieran obligadas a permanecer en nuestra ciudad durante el confinamiento por el Covid19.
La llegada desde Málaga de un grupo miembro de la tripulación de un crucero
Pocos días después de la declaración del estado de alarma en España, tuvimos la petición de un grupo que debía pasar unas noches en el hotel para posteriormente salir desde el aeropuerto de El Prat hacia la India, su país de origen.
A resultas del cierre de los aeropuertos en India, este grupo de 23 señores, se ha visto obligado a quedarse en nuestro hotel, resignado y paciente esperando que el gobierno de la India les permita regresar a su país.
Muchísimas gracias por su responsabilidad, paciencia y educación
Ya hace casi un mes que, de forma ejemplar, este grupo de la India está respetando las normas de protección y de seguridad con una paciencia, educación y saber estar encomiable. Es por ello, que queremos dedicar este post a homenajearles y agradecerles su actitud que sin duda es imprescindible para disminuir cualquier riesgo o situación indeseable.
Hemos pensado que era una bonita idea conocer de cerca cómo están viviendo esta situación en Barcelona, darles voz para que sus sentimientos, emociones, anhelos, preocupaciones lleguen a nuestro público lector y podamos darles un mejor apoyo y comprensión en estos momentos difíciles.
Así que les hemos formulado unas preguntas que libre y amablemente nos han respondido.
1. ¿Cómo fue que llegaron al Continental Palacete? ¿Qué sucedió para que no pudieran marcharse a la India?
Bueno, comenzó el 21 de marzo de 2020, somos marinos que trabajamos en la línea de cruceros Pullmantur Cruises, con sede en España. El 20 de marzo de 2020, nos dijeron que nos desembarcarán al día siguiente y que volaríamos a la India.
Al recibir la información, nos pusimos en contacto con los recursos humanos a bordo del barco para decirles que India había prohibido sus vuelos internacionales dentro y fuera del país, a lo que no se molestaron en tomar ninguna medida de ayuda.
Al día siguiente, nosotros, 23 indios miembros de la tripulación desembarcamos en el puerto de Málaga temprano en la mañana y nos enviaron en autobús desde el puerto de Málaga al aeropuerto de Barcelona, ??lo que supuso unas 10-11 horas en autocar.
Durante todo el camino no hubo tiendas abiertas ya que España había decretado el estado de alarma. Verificamos nuestros billetes aéreos en línea en el puerto de Málaga y se mostraban como cancelados.
Nos pusimos en contacto nuevamente con el departamento de recursos humanos, pero nos convencieron de que no se cancelaba nada y que continuáramos el viaje a Barcelona para verificar los vuelos en el servicio de asistencia del aeropuerto de Barcelona.
Ante esto, declaramos que no bajaríamos del autobús y que nos pondríamos en contacto con la embajada de la India, pues no queríamos quedarnos varados en el aeropuerto. Al final, la compañía nos organizó el hotel en Barcelona: el Hotel Continental Palacete.
La prohibición internacional impuesta por India en los vuelos internacionales no nos permitió volar. Y nuestra compañía no siguió las pautas del gobierno indio con respecto a los vuelos prohibidos. La embajada india se aseguró también de nuestra estancia aquí en el hotel.
2. ¿Cómo viven esta experiencia de confinamiento desde el Continental Palacete?
El confinamiento en el hotel es apreciable, el personal del hotel y la recepción han sido realmente serviciales, nos están brindando alimentos y servicios básicos como desinfectantes y guantes en el área del buffet. La estadía es mental y físicamente muy desafiante y frustrante ya que ahora estamos asustados y cansados.
La larga estancia, desde el 21 de marzo confinados, también nos ha roto físicamente, ya que estamos sufriendo estrés traumático y cada segundo sentimos riesgo de que no haya asistencia médica en caso de que uno de nosotros enfermara.
3. ¿Qué mecanismos están utilizando para superar el confinamiento desde sus habitaciones?
Los métodos para superar los efectos de esta estadía son principalmente la utilización de nuestros teléfonos móviles usando el WIFI para conectarse con casa, practicar yoga, caminar por los pasillos. Es una situación muy difícil y muy desafiante para nosotros ya que no estamos en casa.
4. ¿Cómo están viviendo esta situación de lejanía sus familias?
Nuestras familias se echaron a llorar cuando supieron nuestra situación de estar atrapados a causa de la pandemia de Covid 19. Y más estando en España, uno de los países donde existe tanto contagio y muertes. Algunos de los miembros de nuestra familia son pacientes cardíacos, padecen afecciones médicas e incluso una mujer embarazada que espera en casa a su esposo y está sola sóla en su casa de la India.
Algunos de nosotros no lo hemos contado a nuestras familias para no crearles pánico, ya que ellos también están luchando contra el susto de la pandemia de Covid 19 en India.
5. ¿Cuál es la situación en su lugar de origen en este momento?
Somos de Mumbai, Hyderabad y Delhi y algunos otros estados más de India. En total somos 23 marineros indios. La situación allí es que están encerrados, sólo se permite salir de 7 a.m. a 1 p.m. y solamente para comprar productos esenciales como alimentos, medicamentos, etc. India también está luchando con la pandemia actual de Covid 19 y los casos aumentan cada día en número.
6. ¿Qué mensaje/s les gustaría transmitir al mundo para superar mejor esta etapa?
El mensaje más importante ahora para el mundo podría ser quedarse en casa en cuarentena para mantener a otros a salvo. También, cuando esto se supere, los seres humanos deberían actuar de manera más responsable con la naturaleza y entre ellos.
Es necesario que haya más unidad independientemente de la nacionalidad, el origen y debemos ayudarnos mutuamente. Cuando algo como esta pandemia llega al ser humano, no diferencia a ricos o pobres, hombres o mujeres.
En lugar de difundir el odio, debemos difundir la sonrisa y la calidez a las personas necesitadas, ya que no cuesta un centavo. También nosotros, como marineros, queremos agradecer a todo el personal sanitario y encargados de la ley y del orden, como la policía, los militares y todos aquellos que mantienen el mundo seguro en orden en una condición tan terrible.
El mensaje de nosotros es que, por favor, se sigan las pautas del gobierno, quédese en casa para nuestro propio futuro y también para las generaciones futuras.

Todo lo que queremos a través de esta publicación es solicitar al Gobierno de España y al Gobierno de India que aceleren la repatriación a nuestro país de la manera más segura y pronta. También queremos hacernos oír en las diferentes comunidades de Barcelona, ??incluidas las comunidades indias, para que nos brinden ayuda con algunos comestibles indios básicos.
Por último, pero no menos importante, queremos agradecer a la Embajada India en Madrid, al embajador indio Sr. Sanjay Verma y al segundo secretario Sr. Manoj Kapur por toda la ayuda que nos han brindado para nuestra seguridad y también agradecer a la Gerencia del Hotel Continental Palacete por su hospitalidad. Queremos llegar a casa de manera segura y por esto toda la ayuda que nos brinden será muy apreciada y agradecida.
