A hotel family since 1826
As a family tradition in Hotel sector and Barcelona since 1826, we are delighted to share with you part of our history that its link with the Tibidabo amusement park and temple.
In this post we will explain you the history of Tibidabo and how our father, José María Malagarriga Miralbell and, later, with our mother Pilar Vallet Hernández, dedicated body and soul to the restaurants (La Masía, La Miranda and the Pim, Pam, Pum) and hotels of Tibidabo (Hotel La Masía and Hotel Florida).
A little history of the Tibidabo Amusement Park
It all began in 1886, when a neo-Gothic chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart was built at the top of Tibidabo, and in 1902 the first stone of the temple that today presides over the mountain was laid.
Later a tramway would be built from the Bonanova road to a funicular that would reach the top of Tibidabo where an amusement park would be set up.
On October 21, 1901, Cardinal Casañas, bishop of Barcelona, inaugurated the Tibidabo Amusement Park in front of 500 guests, which soon became the preferred area for the upper middle class, where they could enjoy themselves and have lunch at the Hotel Restaurant Coll or at the Gran Café.
In 1924, to facilitate the arrival of clients to the new Hotel Florida, a little train was built to travel along the entire ridge of the mountain.
The outbreak of war in 1936 led to the collectivization of the Tibidabo amusement park, which was abandoned, and the Sacred Heart temple was semi-destroyed.
Years of restoration and modernization
Once the war was over, the “S.A. El Tibidabo” was constituted with the Andreu family in charge, the enclosure was restored and new attractions arrived, the Gran Café Restaurant Tibidabo and the Hotel Coll were refurbished, which in 1946 became the restaurant La Masía and in 1947 “the labyrinth” was opened, becoming the first attraction after the war.
The difficulty of accessing the enclosure from the city was the main handicap of the amusement park and in 1953 a new train station in Sarrià was inaugurated in Avenida del Tibidabo.
Tibidabo, children’s paradise” is the park’s new slogan.
The park will be updated with important improvements, the integral reform of the funicular and new attractions.
Our father’s, José Mª Malagarriga Miralbell, leading management
At the end of the 50’s, our father was already in charge of all the hotels owned by the Andreu family, the Florida, La Masia, La Rotonda and, shortly, the emblematic and impressive “Cap Sa Sal” in Begur on the Costa Brava.
The Continental was not so directly managed by my uncle Enrique and other brothers, together with my grandfather, Francisco Malagarriga Fabra… but let’s continue with the history of Tibidado…
After 60 years of works, as a result of the destruction during the war, the Temple of the Sacred Heart was inaugurated on October 10, 1961.
In 1970, the Tibidabo Park was enlarged, which opened the go-kart circuit, the La Miranda restaurant, the merry-go-rounds, the “Casa de Cristal” (Glass House). It is the most golden decade of Tibidabo. My brother José María and I were born in 1969 and 1970 respectively.
What a blessing to have a father as director of Tibidado! We only had to explain a joke to get on the famous “roller coaster” and of course we didn’t pay for anything, being able to invite family and friends! A golden time for Tibidabo and for our family.
First buffet in Barcelona: the “Bufet Català”
Together with my mother, they created the “bufet català” dinners, the first buffet in Barcelona and, maybe, one of the first in Spain and Europe at that time and a success thanks to the “word of mouth”, the fun, as they were enlivened with music, and the ads that our mother designed for “La Vanguardia”! Here are some photos to remember…
Later, my parents preferred the tranquility of the weekends – up to that moment – they always had to work! And they decided to focus on the Continental Hotel, which by then had been sold in part because of the large debts incurred up to that time.
Our father passed away in 1983, but with our mother, her extraordinary talent and effort, we managed to preserve and expand the Continental Hotel, buying in 1999 the “palacete” and inaugurating in 2002, the Continental Palacete, a real dream!

Una familia hotelera desde 1826
Como familia hotelera en Barcelona desde 1826, nos gusta compartir contigo parte de nuestra historia que está vinculada con el parque de atracciones del Tibidado.
En este post te explicaremos la historia del Tibidabo y como nuestro padre, José María Malagarriga Miralbell y, después, con nuestra madre Pilar Vallet Hernández, se dedicaron en cuerpo y alma a los restaurantes (La Masía, La Miranda y el Pim, Pam, Pum) y hoteles del Tibidabo (Hotel La Masía y Hotel Florida).
Un poco de historia del parque de Atracciones del Tibidabo
Todo empezó en 1886, cuando se edificó en la cima del Tibidabo una ermita neogótica dedicada al Sagrado Corazón y en 1902 se puso la primera piedra del templo que hoy preside la montaña.
Más tarde se construiría un tranvía desde la carretera de la Bonanova hasta un funicular que llegaría a la cumbre de Tibidabo donde se montaría un Parque de Atracciones.
El 21 de octubre de 1901 el cardenal Casañas, obispo de Barcelona, inauguró el Parque de Atracciones del Tibidabo ante 500 invitados, que muy pronto se convirtió en la zona preferida de la alta burguesía, donde podía divertirse y almorzar en el Hotel Restaurante Coll o en el Gran Café.
En 1924, para facilitar la llegada de los clientes al nuevo Hotel Florida se construyó un trenecito que hacía un recorrido por toda la cresta de la montaña.
El estallido de la guerra en 1936 llevó a la colectivización del parque de atracciones del Tibidabo que quedó abandonado y el templo del Sagrado Corazón fue semi destruido.
Años de restauración y modernización
Una vez finalizada la guerra, se constituyó la «S.A. El Tibidabo» con la familia Andreu al mando, se restauró el recinto y llegaron nuevas atracciones, se reformaron el Gran Café Restaurante Tibidabo y el Hotel Coll, que en 1946 pasó a ser el restaurante La Masía y en 1947 se abre «el laberinto», convirtiéndose en la primera atracción después de la Guerra.
La dificultad para acceder al recinto desde la ciudad era el principal handicap del parque de atracciones y ya en 1953 se inaugurará en la Avenida del Tibidabo, una nueva estación del tren de Sarrià.
El “Tibidabo, paraíso de los niños” es el nuevo slogan del parque.
El parque se actualizará con mejoras importantes, la reforma integral del funicular y nuevas atracciones.
La dirección de nuestro padre, José Mª Malagarriga Miralbell
A finales de los años 50, nuestro Padre, ya estaba al cargo de todos los hoteles propiedad de la familia Andreu, el Florida, La Masía, La Rotonda y, en breve, se inauguraría el emblemático e impresionante “Cap Sa Sal” en Begur en la Costa Brava.
El Continental no lo gestionaba tan directamente, estaba mi tío Enrique y otros hermanos, junto con mi abuelo, Francisco Malagarriga Fabra… pero continuemos con la historia del Tibidado…
Tras 60 años de obras, fruto de la destrucción durante la guerra, el 10 de octubre de 1961 se inauguró el Templo del Sagrado Corazón.
En 1970, se amplía el parque del Tibidabo, que abre el circuito de Karts, el restaurante La Miranda, los Tiovivos, la “Casa de Cristal”. Es la década más dorada del Tibidado. Mi hermano José María y yo, nacimos en el 1969 y 1970 respectivamente.
¡Qué bendición tener un papá director del Tibidado! ¡Sólo teníamos que explicar un chiste para subir a la famosa “montaña rusa” y claro no pagábamos por nada, pudiendo invitar a familia y amigos! Una época dorada para el Tibidabo y para nuestra familia.
Primer buffet de Barcelona: el “Bufet Català”
Junto con mi madre, crearon las cenas del “bufet català”, el primer buffet de Barcelona y, quizás, uno de los primeros de España y Europa en aquella época y un éxito gracias al “boca a boca”, a la diversión, ya que se amenizaban con música, ¡y a los anuncios que nuestra madre diseñaba para “La Vanguardia”! He aquí algunas fotos para el recuerdo…
¡Más tarde, mis padres prefirieron la tranquilidad de los fines de semana -hasta el momento- tenían que trabajar siempre! Y decidieron centrarse en el hotel Continental que para entonces se había vendido una parte a causa de las grandes deudas contraídas hasta ese momento.
Nuestro padre falleció en 1983, pero con nuestra madre, su extraordinario talento y esfuerzo, hemos conseguido conservar y ampliar el Hotel Continental, comprando en 1999 el “palacete” inaugurando en 2002, el Continental Palacete, ¡un verdadero sueño!
