The neighbourhood’s location has allowed it to undergo an overwhelming transformation, from its beginnings as Barcelona’s Chinatown, located near the port, to the Raval that we find today, with modern museums and cultural centres such as the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art), the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) and the recently added Filmoteca de Catalunya, among others.
On the other hand, it is important to highlight the birth of new multi-purpose cultural centres such as “El Bigote del Sr. Smith” located at 38, Joaquín Costa Street, becoming home to new talents. As well as, “Sala Fenix”, with a theatre programme and exhibition hall located at 31, Riereta Street.
If there is one thing that makes it stand out, it is the authenticity and uniqueness of its narrow streets, which undoubtedly hide treasures that make the neighbourhood worth exploring. However, we must not forget that it is essential to adopt a new mindset when visiting and connecting to our surroundings. And we are referring not only to putting aside preconceived prejudices, but also to individual responsibility towards sustainable tourism.

Let’s start with probably the 4 most antcient and historic shops in the Raval neighbourhood:
- Paraigües Miró: This small shop is interesting to pay a visit to learn about the history of the old trade of the umbrella-maker and can be visited at 33-35, Riera Alta street.
- Viader Farm: Chocolate lovers have an obligatory stop at this family business since 1904. Close to the busy Rambla, it is located on D’en Xuclà street, and it hides a secret: the Cacaolat milkshake was created here, and for those with a sweet tooth, it will certainly be something to keep in mind. Many of their products are suitable for coeliacs, so there are no excuses, come and taste them!
- Llansà Herbalist: this emblematic establishment retains the same appearance as when it was started in 1907, and still belongs to the same family. It is located at 18, Elisabets street, very close to the Rambla and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA). It specialises in medicinal herbs, essential oils and phytotherapy products, to name but a few.
- Bubub: In this small shop, its owners, Joan and Isabel are part of the Cooperativa Agraria El Prat de Llobregat and the Agrupació de Defensa Vegetal (ADV) del Baix Llobregat. They transport their harvest every day to their shop in the Raval and sell other products such as honey from nearby cooperatives. Don’t hesitate to venture out and discover it at 29, Joaquín Costa street.

En Ville Restaurant, located at 14, Doctor Dou street. It is part of an emblematic building built in 1877. With creative cuisine and fresh, seasonal products from traditional Catalan cuisine
L’Antic forn el seu restaurant, at 28, Pintor Fortuny street. Specialising in grilled and traditional Catalan cuisine. It is highly recommended to try the famous “calçotada”, from November to March. So, get ready and come!
Dos pebrots, at 19, Doctor Dou street. New Mediterranean cuisine with all kinds of suggestions, influenced by the different civilisations that have left their mark to reinterpret and surprise. An open-plan restaurant where customers can see how the food is prepared. Let yourself be surprised; it will make your mouth water!
L’Hortet Vegetarià, at 32, Pintor Fortuny street. A place for vegetarian cuisine for over 50 years, where traditional cuisine is fused with new trends, whether you are vegetarian or not, try it, you’ll be impressed!
Teresa Carles, located at 2, Jovellanos street. A place that prioritises seasonal products, a place for healthy flexitarian cuisine, since 1979. With eco-friendly and innovative menus. It’s a very interesting experience that won’t leave you indifferent!

El barrio del Raval, en el distrito de Ciutat Vella, está situado en pleno centro de Barcelona, muy cerca de nuestro Hotel Continental Barcelona. Un barrio donde convive una gran diversidad, convive alrededor de 45 nacionalidades, lo cual demuestra lo variopinta que puede llegar a ser su riqueza cultural. Cualquier persona que desee visitarlo, descubrirá rincones excepcionales que no encontrará en ninguna otra parte de la ciudad.

La localización del barrio le ha permitido desarrollar una transformación aplastante, desde sus comienzos como el barrio chino de Barcelona, situado cerca del puerto, hasta el Raval que hoy nos encontramos, con modernos museos y centros culturales como el MACBA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo), el Centro de Cultura Contemporáneo de Barcelona (CCCB) y la recientemente añadida, Filmoteca de Cataluña, entre otros.
Por otro lado, es importante destacar el nacimiento de nuevos centros culturales polivalentes tales como “El Bigote del Sr. Smith” situado en la calle Joaquín Costa, 38, convirtiéndose en hogar de nuevos talentos. Así como, la Sala Fenix, con programación teatral y sala de exposición situada en la calle de la Riereta, 31.
Si por algo destaca es por la autenticidad y la particularidad de sus estrechas calles que, sin duda, esconden tesoros por los que vale la pena adentrarse en el barrio. - Paraigües Miró: Este pequeño comercio es interesante para conocer la historia del antiguo oficio del paragüero y se puede visitar en la calle Riera Alta, 33-35.
- Granja Viader: Los amantes del chocolate tienen una parada obligatoria en este negocio familiar desde 1904. Cerca de la concurrida Rambla, está situado en la calle d’en Xuclà, y esconde un secreto, aquí se creó el batido Cacaolat, sin duda, para los más golosos será algo para tener en cuenta. A destacar, muchos de sus productos son aptos para celiacos, por lo que no hay excusas, ¡acércate y saborea!
- Herbolari Llansà: Este emblemático establecimiento conserva la misma apariencia que cuando se puso en marcha en 1907, y sigue perteneciendo a la misma familia. Está situado en la calle Elisabets, 18, muy cerca de la Rambla y del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona (MACBA). Es especialista en hierbas medicinales, aceites esenciales y productos de fitoterapia, entre otros.
- Bubub: En este pequeño comercio, sus dueños, Joan e Isabel forman parte de la Cooperativa Agraria El Prat de Llobregat y la Agrupación de Defensa Vegetal (ADV) del Baix Llobregat. Transportan cada día su cosecha a su tienda del Raval y, además, venden otros productos como la miel de cooperativas cercanas. No dudes en aventurarte a descubrirlo en la calle Joaquín Costa, 29.

- En Ville Restaurante, situado en C/Doctor Dou, 14. Forma parte de un emblemático edificio construido en 1877. Con una cocina creativa y productos frescos y de temporada tradicionales de la cocina catalana.
- L’Antic forn el seu restaurant, en la calle Pintor Fortuny, 28. Especializado en cocina a la brasa y cocina catalana tradicional. Es muy recomendable probar la famosa “calçotada”, desde noviembre a marzo. Así que, ¡prepárate y ven!
- Dos pebrots, en la calle doctor dou, 19 Nueva apuesta de cocina mediterránea con todo tipo de sugerencias, con influencia de las diferentes civilizaciones que han dejado su huella para reinterpretar y sorprender. Un local abierto donde el cliente puede ver cómo se prepara la comida. ¡Déjate sorprender, te hará la boca agua!
- L’Hortet Vegetarià, en la calle Pintor Fortuny, 32 Un espacio para la cocina vegetariana desde hace más de 50 años, donde se fusiona la cocina tradicional con las nuevas tendencias, seas o no vegetariano, ¡pruébalo, te impresionará!
- Teresa Carles, en la calle de Jovellanos, 2 Un lugar que prioriza los productos de temporada, un espacio para la cocina flexitariana saludable, desde 1979. Con menús eco-friendly e innovadores. Es una experiencia muy interesante que no te dejará indiferente. ¡anímate!
