La Castañada is a traditional festival in Catalonia that is celebrated on November 1, coinciding with All Saints’ Day.
This festival wants to commemorate our ancestors by consuming products such as chestnuts, sweet potatoes and “panellets”, typically autumn. Legend has it that for every chestnut eaten on All Saints’ Eve, a soul is released from purgatory.
It is an old pagan tradition that was celebrated throughout Europe in which the end of the harvest and the good weather were assimilated with the cult of the souls of deceased relatives.
Although in its beginnings the day of the chestnut had a stronger connection with respect for deceased relatives, today it is still common to visit cemeteries or hold a memorial ceremony. This is mixed with a somewhat more familiar, festive and celebratory atmosphere with the tasting of chestnuts and roasted sweet potatoes, the preparation of panellets and the consumption of muscatel, a low-proof, sweet liquor that goes wonderfully well.

La Castañada es una fiesta tradicional de Cataluña que se celebra el 1 de noviembre, coincidiendo con el Día de Todos los Santos.
Esta fiesta quiere conmemorar a nuestros antepasados consumiendo productos como castañas, boniatos y “panellets”, típicamente otoñales. Cuenta la leyenda que por cada castaña que se come durante la noche de Todos los Santos, un alma es liberada del purgatorio.
Es una vieja tradición pagana que se celebraba en toda Europa en la que se asimilaba el fin de la cosecha y el buen tiempo con el culto a las almas de los parientes difuntos.
Aunque en sus inicios el día de la castañada tenía una conexión más fuerte con el respeto a los familiares difuntos, hoy en día todavía es común visitar los cementerios o hacer una ceremonia memorial. Esto se mezcla con un ambiente un tanto más familiar, festivo y de celebración con la degustación de castañas y boniatos asados, la elaboración de panellets y el consumo de moscatel, un licor de baja graduación, dulce y que acompaña estupendamente.
